Mahjong and Tile Matching

Mahjong solitaire is not the four-player gambling game — it is a single-player clearing puzzle built from the same tiles. A tile is free when one long edge is open and nothing sits on top, and you remove matching free pairs until the layout is empty. The skill is entirely in order: taking an easy pair early can bury the tile you needed later. Mahjong and Tile Matching: common questions

How is this different from real mahjong?

Completely different game. Four-player mahjong is a draw-and-discard game with hands and scoring. Mahjong solitaire uses the tile set for a one-player matching puzzle, which is what almost every browser mahjong game is.

What makes a tile selectable?

It needs a free left or right edge and no tile resting on top of it. A tile hemmed in on both sides is locked until one of its neighbours goes, which is why move order matters so much.

Why do I get stuck with tiles left over?

Usually because an early pair was taken when a different pair would have unlocked more of the board. Where a game offers a shuffle or hint it will tell you, but the reliable habit is to clear the highest and most buried tiles first.
